Automotive Power Resistors Cut Component Counts

Promising to lower costs by reducing component counts, Vishay Intertechnology’s LPSA 300, LPSA 600, and LPSA 800 AEC-Q200 qualified thick-film, high-power resistors mount directly on heatsinks. The components specify power ratings up to 800W and pulse handling up to 1,500J. They serve as pre-charge or discharge resistors for inverters, and converters in electric vehicles (EV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).
With power ratings of 300W (LPSA 300), 600W (LPSA 600), and 800W (), respectively, the components’ pulse capability from 400J to 1,500J for pulses from 0.05s to 0.5s allows them to replace larger wirewound resistors.
Operating temperature is up to +175°C and resistance values range from 0.03Ω to 900 kΩ. They achieve a dielectric strength up to 12 kVRMS and tolerances down to ± 1 %. Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of 10 to 12 weeks. Pricing starts at $23 each/1,000.
